Scripture: John 8:31–36 · Speaker: Pastor Dong Sarmiento
“So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.”
John 8:36 (CSB)
The world often defines freedom as doing whatever we want. Jesus teaches that sin can make us slaves to our desires. True freedom is becoming the kind of person who naturally desires and chooses what God wants.
1. Be Captivated by Christ
John 8:31–32
Freedom begins by seeing Jesus for who He really is. God opens our eyes to know His glory in Christ. As we see His beauty, goodness and worth, we become convinced that He is worthy to follow.
Reflection and application
- What first captivated you about Jesus and led you to want to follow Him?
- What can compete with Jesus for your attention, affection or allegiance today?
- Pray each morning, “Jesus, open my eyes to see You more clearly and know You more deeply.”
2. Continue in Christ
John 8:31–32
Jesus says, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.” To continue means to remain or abide. As we stay connected to Jesus and His Word, His truth begins to reshape our thinking, desires, character and choices. We become increasingly like Him.
Reflection and application
- What is the difference between knowing what Jesus teaches and actually remaining in Him?
- What area of your life needs to be reshaped by Jesus and His Word?
- Spend time this week reading and praying through a portion of Scripture, asking, “Jesus, what do You want to form in me?”
3. Celebrate Freedom
John 8:34–36
Jesus sets us free — not simply to do whatever we want, but to become people who can freely choose what is good. Jesus was free to obey the Father, serve others, forgive His enemies, give generously and lay down His life. Christian freedom is freedom from self-rule so that we can be free to love God and others.
Reflection and application
- Where do you most need Christ’s freedom right now — freedom from fear, selfishness, greed, resentment, pride or another desire?
- What would it look like this week to use your freedom to obey, serve, forgive, give or love?
- Choose one concrete act of Christlike freedom this week — do something you are free to do in Christ, even if it requires denying yourself.
Closing truth
The world says: “I am free when I can do what I want.”
Jesus says: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:32
Pray to become the kind of person who naturally desires and chooses what God wants.
